GATCHINA PALACE SERVICE FOR TSAR NICOLAS I OF RUSSIA. Imperial Manufactory, St. Petersburg, circa 1840. Hard porcelain dinner plate, round shape, with scalloped edge, decorated with a large frieze of gold arabesques on a blue background and decorated in the center with the double-headed eagle of the polychrome Romanoffs carrying the globe and sceptre. Good condition. Blue marks on the reverse: N. I. (Nicolas I), under imperial crown. Diameter : 23 cm. History : The Gatchina palace is a former Russian imperial palace located in Gatchina, near Saint Petersburg. Construction of the palace began in 1766 and it took its final form during the reign of Nicholas I in the 1840s. The palace now houses one of the finest collections of porcelain made by the imperial factory. Reference: A plate from the same service is held in the Gatchina Palace collections. See R. I.
