DERUJINSKY Gleb W. (1888-1975) - Lot 266
DERUJINSKY Gleb W. (1888-1975) Harlequin and Colombine in Fokine's ballet Carnaval, staged in 1910. Bronze with brown patina, signed and dated 1920 on the base, resting on a rectangular black marble pedestal. Copy bearing print no. 2. Good condition. H. : 38 cm - W. : 30 cm - D. : 21,5 cm. History : this ballet was first performed in Paris in 1910 by Vaslav Nijinsky (1890-1950) and Tamara Karsavina (1885-1978), then in 1919 by Adolph Bolm (1884-1951) and Ruth Page (1899-1991), during a tour in the USA. It was certainly during this period that the artist created this work, being in exile in the United States since 1919. A sculpture representing Harlequin was also made at this time. It was presented at an exhibition in 1921 at the Milch Gallerie. On the other hand, a version of Colombia Derujinsky is in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago. Reference: see in Jessie Martin Breese's book, "Some New Sculptures For Adorning The Country House", 1921, on page 70, two sculptures by Derujinsky representing Harlequin and Colombine. Provenance: this work was in the dining room of Prince and Princess Felix Youssoupoff in their Parisian residence located at 38 rue Pierre-Guérin, as can be seen in the photo below.
