Rare large bottom of dawn in lace of Argentan, needle, about - Lot 170
Rare large bottom of dawn in lace of Argentan, needle, about 1740-50.
Sumptuous well-balanced decoration of vases or compositions with bouquets of supple leafy stems and large exotic flowers elegantly supported in high and low borders by cartouches in arcade or fall intertwined with branches of foliage or punctuated with flowery motifs, the upper border with vine shoots of beautiful bunches of grapes, branches with oblong fruits and flexible stems of narcissus flowers, the motifs decorated with many points serving intelligently the drawing, and connected by a network of large scalloped mesh.
Shaded ivory linen. Dim. 3,10 m x 66 cm at the widest.
(good condition, rare small holes, some fine restorations to the network, some stains, a discreet vertical seam)
The richness of the design, the mastery of execution of these very tight stitches as well as the general ornamental quality of this vane bottom certainly indicate the work of a great workshop, direct heir of an old royal manufacture created by Louis XIV and Colbert in 1665.
To be compared by the construction of the decoration of the illustrated steering wheel p.102 and 103 of the book : "Dentelles" of Mrs Anne
Kraatz.
