Rare large ruffle with fountains and animals, spindles, Brus - Lot 169
Rare large ruffle with fountains and animals, spindles, Brussels, circa 1740-50.
Probably altar front with sumptuous decoration of two motifs alternating between a date palm and a lemon tree with well drawn fruits: surrounded by numerous fluttering butterflies, a fountain with basins or floating doves, the column topped by a swan with a throat of gushing water jets, cornucopia placed on an elegant decoration reminiscent of ancient ruins and from which spring supple stems with large exotic flowers. In fine linen thread of light ivory color, rare variants of the partridge eye stitch, the motifs connected by a drochel network, the two ends finished by the design of the decoration. Dim. 4,15 m x 55 cm.
(remarkable freshness of conservation, rare very pale tasks, a vertical seam, very small restoration on the left end, rare broken stitches to the network)
By the richness of the drawing, the great smoothness and the dexterity of realization, this broad and long flounce illustrates remarkably the quality of production of the most beautiful laces carried out in the area of Brussels at this time.
Cf. "Three Centuries of Lace" Mrs. Risselin-Steenebrugen, fig. 113 and 118.
