Pierre Guillaume Boëlle (1756-1852) - Lot 297
Pierre Guillaume Boëlle (1756-1852) Portrait of Mademoiselle Mars, circa 1815 (Hundred Days period). Miniature on ivory of round form representing a young woman in three quarters bust. She is dressed in a typical First Empire dress draped with a white cashmere shawl, her hair raised and topped with a few violets. Signed lower right. D. at sight : 6.2 cm Later frame in speckled maple wood, gilt bronze rosettes. (Two rosettes are missing) Anne-Françoise-Hippolyte Boutet known as Mademoiselle Mars (1779-1847) was a French actress admired by the Paris of the early 19th century. She was admitted to the Comédie Française in 1778 and became a member in 1799. Very appreciated under the Empire, she received, from Napoleon I, a whole bedroom furniture which will be presented for sale in 2006. Her friendship with the Emperor made her wear violets on stage, a sign of rallying to his supporters, during the Hundred Days. In 1824, she became the owner of a private mansion in the Rue de la Tour-des-Dames.
