Pouch Red and black leather embroidered with metallic threads, green silk lining Ottoman Empire, dated 1795 10.5 x 17 cm Red leather pouch decorated with metallic threads forming friezes of scrolls on a black background. Under the scalloped flap is an embroidered inscription in Arabic letters: "Islambul". This pun, literally meaning "Where Islam abounds", was frequently used in the eighteenth century to refer to the city of Istanbul, placing the city at the heart of Islam. On the back is embroidered the date 1795 in a floral medallion, framed by a frieze of scrolls. The interior lined with green silk, accompanied by a label with a handwritten inscription on cardboard paper mentioning: "Portefeuille de Mr. Baron de Montmorency - 1795".
