Wedding box with oak core covered with chased leather and gi - Lot 113
Wedding box with oak core covered with chased leather and gilded with small iron, curved lid, handles on the top and on the sides in gilded iron, sliding right side revealing a secret. Decorated with friezes of carnations, scales, winged horses, fleur-de-lys and crowned double-headed eagles, columns of Hercules, dolphins, two profiles in medallions and two hands clasping in a rhombus. Early 17th century, 1615 Height: 22.5 cm - Length: 33 cm - Depth: 21 cm (small wear and tear) Interior trimmed with orange silk The iconography of this box bears the symbols of two sovereign houses, the Germanic Roman Empire with the double-headed eagle and France with the Fleur de lys. In 1615, after lengthy negotiations, two marriages were concluded between Louis XIII with Anne of Austria and Philippe IV and Elisabeth de Bourbon, sister of Louis XIII. Numerous celebrations will take place in Bordeaux, the exchange of the princesses will take place on the island of the pheasants in the middle of the Bidassoat at the Spanish border. On this occasion gifts are exchanged, between the principal actors of these marriages but also with the cities which receive these festivities. This box could have been part of the gifts offered either to the bride and groom or to the towns that hosted the festivities. On this occasion a token was struck by the city of Bordeaux with the two profiles of Louis XIII, laureate as on the box presented, looking at that of Anne of Austria (fig). This token was probably made by the engraver Jean de Nogaret, and was certainly made in the Bordeaux workshop, where the letter K is present.
