The bullring of Madrid, circa 1880 Folded fan, the double sheet of paper printed with medallions hosting bullfighting scenes and the portraits of 22 famous matadors as El Gallito (1895- 1920), El Gordito (1838-1920) or Frascuelo (1842-1898). On the border, inscriptions: "J. Laurent Y Cia /Madrid Paris". This fan is a rare example of photography applied to the fan following the patented process of the Frenchman Jean Laurent (1816-1886), one of the most important photographers of the 19th century, established in Spain. In 1864, he obtained a Spanish invention privilege, with authorization to sell in France where he had a branch office. From 1877, he uses this technique on the fan and sells under the name of "J. Laurent and Cia". Laurent and Cia". On the reverse side, painted in gouache on a photographic background, a crowd of men, women and children crowds among horse-drawn carriages and street vendors near the bullring of the Spanish capital, designated in the background on the pediment "Plaza de toros". It is possible that the man on the right, holding a fan and calling out to us, is a self-portrait of J. Laurent. Illegible signature and date on the left "Madrid 1877". Bone mount pierced and engraved. Metal clasp. H.t. 25 cm/H.f. 14,2 cm (accidents, wear)
