The Kindness of Alexander, ca. 1840-1850 - Lot 211
The Kindness of Alexander, ca. 1840-1850 Folded fan, the double sheet in lithographed paper and enhanced with gouache of a scene inspired by ancient life. A soldier on the left is guarding a man as a prisoner, while on the right, a woman is offering a fruit to a soldier. In the center, a soldier in a toga evoking antiquity welcomes a woman on her knees, begging for mercy. Behind her, a large retinue is prostrating or imploring. Rich gilded scrolls on the sides. It is perhaps an evocation of the life of Alexander the Great, or a historical novel in the vein of Walter Scott. Reverse: shepherd and shepherdesses watering sheep. White mother-of-pearl mounting, engraved and gilded. H.t. 27 cm-H.f. 10,7 cm (restorations)
