Dido and Aeneas, circa 1740-1750 Folded fan, the double gouache-painted paper sheet of Aeneas presenting himself to Dido on his throne. Mentor, wearing an old man's white beard, stands aside. Painted reverse of Venus and Love playing with a globe. Engraved and gilded white mother-of-pearl mount decorated with a peasant girl carrying a basket of flowers, surrounded by two young men, one holding a cage, the other a wreath of flowers. The carved plumes of a young girl crowning herself with flowers. H.t. 25 cm-H.f. 10 cm (minor wear, restorations)
