The Bullfight, circa 1750 - Lot 92
The Bullfight, circa 1750 Rare folded fan, the double sheet of paper, mounted in English, and painted with gouache of a bullfighting scene in Spain, possibly Plaza Mayor at Madrid. At right, the bull enters the ring. Four black-clad picadors are on horseback, their spears in hand. They are each accompanied by two assistants, in the colors of their party, green, blue, yellow and red. A group of musicians on the left animates the show while the crowd masses in the foreground. An elegant assembly has taken place in the central stand, reserved for the sovereigns and their entourage. Painted reverse of the dead bull, drawn by a quadriga in the blue colors of the winner. Fine ivory mount* cut, carved and engraved with a pagoda in the center, among flowers, and two cartels in symmetry animated by characters. H.t. 26.5 cm-H.f. 11.2 cm (wear, stains, restorations) See: a fan similar in subject matter in the Museo Lazaro Galdiano, Madrid, illustrated in Nancy Armstrong, "Fans in Spain", Philip Wilson publisher, 2004, p. 128.
