William IV of Orange-Nassau, ca. 1740-1750 Rare commissioned fan. Folded fan, the leaf in skin, mounted in English, and painted with gouache of a composition inspired by "Venus showing her arms to Aeneas" by Nicolas Poussin. On the left, Minerva and the Renommée advance towards a soldier in armor. One holding a crown and a spear, the other crowned with laurels, and brandishing the trumpet of Renommée. In the center, the profile portrait of a man wearing the blue cordon of the order of the Holy Spirit. On the right, a love presents his coat of arms and armor. A large coat of arms identifies him as William IV of Orange-Nassau (1711-1751). Second prince of Orange of the branch Nassau-Dietz, he was the first to receive the general stathudérat of the Republic of the United Provinces. On the right, a branch of orange tree in bloom is posed on the ground. Lovers picking oranges on the reverse. Mounting out of ivory* cut out, engraved and heightened with the gouache with decoration of pomegranates and young women. H.t. 27,5 cm-H.f. 13,6 cm In a cardboard box with the address of the fan maker Rodien in Paris under the lid. 19th century
