Gale of wind, circa 1700 - Lot 58
Gale of wind, circa 1700 Fan leaf, painted with gouache, pasted on wood and completed for a rectangle setting. It is illustrated with an original subject showing the effects of a violent gust of wind. Under the breath of four loves emerging from the clouds on the left, mills are blown away, and a miller narrowly escapes from his collapsing mill, while another is blown away by a cloud. Men and women lose their hats or their milk canes. Others struggle against the wind, and washerwomen try to hold their laundry. This is probably an evocation of a major storm that hit Europe, perhaps the one of 1700 that affected London and the Netherlands in particular. 21,5 x 41 cm In a gilded wooden frame, rectangular. 31 x 51 cm (small lacks)
