Entourage d'Alexandre CABANEL (1823-1889) Orpheus losing Eurydice for the second time Oil on canvas 40 x 26 cm. Monogrammed, lower right: RG (?) This highly dramatic and heart-rending subject illustrates the decisive moment when Orpheus, breaking his promise to Hades, turns to his beloved during their escape from the Underworld, condemning her to a second and final death. This particular subject came into vogue in the last third of the 19th century. In the collection of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris alone, painted sketches by Louis Adan (1862, ENSBA Esq p ph 47), Jean-Paul Milliet (1868, ENSBA Esq p 109) bear witness to this, Eugène Duval (1868, ENSBA Esq p 109), Paul Buffet (1887, ENSBA Esq p 168), Jean-Albert Creswell (1887, ENSBA Esq p 167), Paul Abel Lefebvre (1887, ENSBA Esq p 169).
