Christophe FRATIN (1801-1864) - Lot 289
Christophe FRATIN (1801-1864) Frederick the Great of Prussia on horseback. Very rare bronze from around 1860 bearing the stamp of Christophe Fratin's mastery with a handwritten note by the artist under the blackened wooden base Le grand Frédéric 1863; the rest of the annotation is illegible. H. : 42 cm, W ; : 41 cm The same model is in the Musée des Beaux Arts de Metz, the artist's birthplace. Fratin's handwriting highlights a characteristic d that is found on the letter sent from Vetheuil. (see National Archives). The stamp of mastery with the inverted N confirms the origin of this piece as coming from the artist's workshop. The piece presented here is an edition made by Fratin around 1860, the chasing has been particularly careful. The artist died a few years later in 1864.
