Ecole francaise vers 1760 - Lot 178
Ecole francaise vers 1760 Portrait of Antoine de Quélen, duc de Lavauguyon, prince of Carencey Oil on canvas. H. : 79.5cm ; W. : 64cm Small accidents and restorations. A brilliant colonel in the Beauvoisis infantry regiment, Antoine de Quélen (1706-1772) was promoted to the rank of marshal de camp after the battle of Fontenoy in 1745. He was promoted to lieutenant general of the king's armies in 1748. His military career ended in 1758 when Louis XV appointed him governor of the children of France. Responsible for the education of the future Louis XVI, he wrote to the Empress Marie Thérèse of Austria to express his scepticism about his marriage to Marie Antoinette. Remained in the model's descendants, our portrait was only known by the copy made by the painter Sophie Rochard (1810-1842), at the request of King Louis-Philippe for the historical museum of Versailles in 1838.
