Porcelain and gilt bronze writing desk, the tray with contou - Lot 172
Porcelain and gilt bronze writing desk, the tray with contours in Chinese porcelain of Kangxi period (mark on the back) with a large blue background cut out and set in a gadroon frame, It supports two 18th century Chinese porcelain pomegranates forming an inkwell and a sand box, a chased and gilt bronze penholder, a leafy terrace bearing an 18th century Chinese porcelain sage and a two-branched chased and gilt bronze leafy light arm. Louis XV period. H. : 11cm ; W. : 25cm ; D. : 21cm. Our writing desk perfectly illustrates the taste for exoticism in vogue in the early years of the reign of Louis XV. It testifies to the imagination and inventiveness of the mercantile merchants who, following the example of Lazare Duvaux, knew how to adapt Far Eastern porcelain to European tastes by creating objects of great luxury with the addition of a gilded bronze frame which gave them a new purpose.
