Neo-Pompeian style display cabinet in oak and gilded wood wi - Lot 92
Neo-Pompeian style display cabinet in oak and gilded wood with inlaid decoration of black, red and green tinted maple, lemon and satinwood, inlaid with mother-of-pearl, ivory, pewter, brass and marble. Marble shelf Portor d'Espagne. H. : 211 cm Around 1900 8000/ Our piece of furniture is fully in line with this desire for polychromy thanks to the different species and materials, as well as the tint of the wood. Its range of colors, where red and black as well as yellow dominate, evokes Pompeian frescoes. This is also the case for the inlaid motifs adorning the two doors of the piece: a griffin (inlaid with mother-of-pearl) in a linear antique architecture decorated with garlands. This type of motif on a plain black background is directly inspired by the frescoes known as the third Pompeian style, which appeared in the 20s BC. Finally, in the field of ornamentation, we note the antique-style palmettes, similar to Jones' boards, that decorate the drawers under the marble shelf, as well as the double caduceus that decorates the attic. The piece of furniture is also embellished in its center with an octagonal panel featuring a musician faun in mother of pearl and polished pewter inlay. He is playing the tibia, a wind instrument that was used for sacrifices, concerts or bacchanalian celebrations such as in the famous Borghese Crater. Finally, on the sides of the cabinet, eight panels represent, in inlay, birds. In these naturalistic scenes, in which the colour is most varied, each bird observes an insect, like the many naturalistic representations of birds in Pompeian frescoes and mosaics.
