Atelier de Sir Thomas LAWRENCE (1769-1830) - Lot 26
Atelier de Sir Thomas LAWRENCE (1769-1830) Portrait of the Duchess of Berry, née Princess Marie-Caroline of Bourbon-Siciles (1798-1870) Oil on canvas, circa 1825, preserved in its Charles X period giltwood frame, decorated with arabesques and stylized motifs. Restoration, good general condition. Sight: H.: 60 cm - W.: 47 cm. Frame: H.: 84 cm - W.: 75 cm. History: in 1825, King George IV of Great Britain wished to have a portrait of King Charles X, and sent Sir Lawrence, then director of the Royal Academy, to Paris. This work was painted in the Tuileries. It was on this occasion that he met the Duchess of Berry and she asked him for his portrait. This rather flattering work was done in October 1825, it shows the duchess wearing a white satin dress with a few roses on the left shoulder, her head covered with a tartan hat that evokes the Scottish fashion revealed in Walter Scott's novels. This famous portrait is similar to the one in the collections of the Château de Versailles (Inv. MV 8505). There is also a replica which was offered in 1830 by the duchess to the marquis de Forbin, director of the royal museums, as well as other replicas (museums of Puy and Nîmes and in several private collections
