SALON TABLE OF THE PRINCESS VICTORIA OF GREAT BRITAIN (1840- - Lot 364
SALON TABLE OF THE PRINCESS VICTORIA OF GREAT BRITAIN (1840-1901). Of circular form, applied with a rich ornamentation in bronze with chased and gilded decoration framing floral motifs in wood marquetry. The main part is adorned with a jasper top, framed by a frieze of acanthus leaves, it opens in front by a secret drawer, activated by a push-button. The lower part is held by a shelf decorated with a rich marquetry of the monogram of Princess Victoria (V) under an English crown, framed by a branch of thistles and a branch of roses held by a ribboned bow: emblems of the United Kingdom. The whole is held by a tripod base composed of uprights with cut sides, decorated with a fall of holly leaves and juniper branches, extended by small arched feet ending with bronze lion paws. Small accidents, but good condition. Missing an element, certainly a plate on which would have been inscribed the history of this piece of furniture, or a dedication of provenance. H. : 70 cm - Diam. : 37,5 cm. Reference : this table is related to a model made by Martin Carlin (1730-1785) delivered by the Merchant-Mercier Dominique Daguerre for the Duchess of Mazarin in 1779, garnished with a Sèvres porcelain plate and preserved at the J. History: our table was ordered and offered most probably in 1858, on the occasion of the marriage of the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria, Princess Victoria, to the Crown Prince Frederick William III of Prussia (1831-1888) who became in 1888, King of Prussia and German Emperor. From this union eight children were born, the eldest of whom became the last German emperor, William II (1888-1918).
