SCHEFFER Ary (1795-1858). - Lot 242
SCHEFFER Ary (1795-1858). Mortuary face of Prince Ferdinand-Philippe, Duke of Orleans (1810-1842). Charcoal drawing with red chalk enhancement on paper, preserved in an antique mahogany frame decorated with an applied motif at each corner in gilded metal with flowers surrounded by arabesques. Freckles, but good condition. Sight: H.: 33 cm - W.: 31,5 cm. Frame: H.: 65,5 cm - W.: 54,5 cm. History: this drawing is a preparatory study by the artist, made around 1843, for the cenotaph sculpted in white marble by Henry de Triqueti (1803-1874), for the church of Notre-Dame-de-Compassion, erected on the site where Prince Ferdinand-Philippe d'Orléans died after a carriage accident on 13 July 1842. It depicts the Duke of Orleans in his final moments, dying on the makeshift bed in the Cordier grocery store.
