TABLE SERVICE OF THE DUKE OF CHARTRES, PILLIVUYT, PARIS, CIRCA 1860. Set of 16 dinner plates, including 1 soup plate, in hard porcelain, with a rimmed border enhanced by a frieze of gold pearls, decorated on the top of the rim with the monogram R.O. (Robert d'Orléans) in blue letters edged with gold under a crown of prince of France gold. Numerous chips, as is. Red marks on the reverse: Ch. Pillivuyt & Cie, Paris. Diameter: 23 and 23.5 cm. History: Prince Robert d'Orléans, Duke of Chartres (1840-1910), was the grandson of King Louis-Philippe and the second son of the Duke of Orleans. From his union with his cousin, Princess Françoise d'Orléans-Bragance (1844-1925), they had five children, the last of whom, Prince Jean (1874-1940), Duke of Guise, was a pretender to the French throne from 1926 to 1940 Provenance: Former collection of the Duc de Chartres, then by descent to his grandchildren, Prince Henri d'Orléans, Comte de Paris (1908-1999) and his wife Princess Isabelle d'Orléans-Bragance (1911-2003), from the Pavillon Montpensier in Eu.
