SPONTINI Gaspard. Fernand Cortez ou la conquête du Mexique, lyrical tragedy in 3 acts by MM. de Jouy and Esménard, set to music and dedicated to His Excellency the Count of Pradel by G. Spontini, May 28, 1817, printed in Paris, by Melles Evard with her autograph signature, volume in-folio (360x280 mm), 594 pages gilt on edges, decorated in the opening with a coloured lithograph signed Geoffroy Engelmann (1788-1839), representing Cortez in act II of scene 7, beautiful period binding in red morocco, stamped in the centre of each plate with the coat of arms of the duchess of Berry, on the left the shield of Artois (azure with three fleur-de-lys embattled gules), on the right the quartered shield of the Two Sicilies surmounted by a crown of sons of France and surrounded by a branch of olive tree and a branch of lily proper gold, framed by a large stylized frieze gilded with small irons, smooth spine decorated with gilded lyres, title in gold letters and numbered at the head of volume C. 24. text in french. Spine unstained, age wear, freckles.
