Important antependium with the Mystic Lamb, Louis XIV period - Lot 132
Important antependium with the Mystic Lamb, Louis XIV period, strong canvas embroidered in full with a chantorné cartouche crowned with a crown with the Mystic Lamb lying on the Book of Seven Seals in the centre; on either side alternate knotted sheaves of wheat ears and branches of roses with large torsos columns. The background is embroidered with white tubular glass beads arranged in concentric circles and in undulating lines that follow the outline of the torsos columns. The cartouche, ears of corn and columns are embroidered with gold tubular glass beads. The flowers and all the coloured parts are embroidered in wool, mainly in split stitch. Designated white or yellow jet embroidery by Saint-Aubin; this embroidery, which "imitates gold or silver fairly well", was developed in the second half of the 17th century in convents under the sumptuary laws restricting the use of gold and silver thread in embroidery. Of exceptional dimensions, this antependium was to decorate the high altar of the choir of a cathedral or church of the first order, (mounted on a frame, missing the pearl and wool parts), 95 x 270 cm.
