Wilhelm Schumann (act.1830-1844) - Lot 16
Wilhelm Schumann (act.1830-1844) The salon of Princess Charles of Prussia, née Maria of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach, in the Prinz Karl Palace (OrdensPalais), Berlin, 1841 Watercolour, on graphite line on paper. 20 x 25 cm. Annotated at the top, in red ink, on the mounting: "The salon of Princess Charles" Provenance : - Marie Charlotte Apollonie de Bruges (1802-1893), wife of Henri-Michel-Scipion, Marquis de la Rochelambert (1789-1863); - Then by descent until today. Charles of Prussia (1801-1883) was the third son of King Frederick William III (1770-1840). Princess Charles of Prussia (Carl von Preussen), née Marie de Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (Marie von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach) and her husband resided in summer at Glienicke Castle near Potsdam and in winter at the Prinz Karl Palace (or OrdensPalais) on WilhelmPlatz in Berlin (Fig.1,2). These two residences had been remodelled and decorated, at their request, by the architect Schinkel in 1826-1827. While it is still possible to visit Glienicke, the Prinz Karl Palace, like all the buildings that made WilhelmPlatz one of Berlin's most joyous squares, did not survive the war. A watercolour by Eduard Gaertner (fig.3), as well as an anonymous watercolour dated 1850 (fig.4), recently presented on the German art market (Bassenge, 01/06/2019, lot 6676), present this exhibition from other points of view. The same black and gilded wooden furniture, the superb corner showcase, and a version of the Judith and Holofernes (1613) by Cristofano Allori (fig.5.), the original of which is preserved in the British Royal Collections, can be seen there. It is part of a set of four interior views by the Countess de la Rochelambert, née Apollonie de Bruges (1803-1893), formerly preserved in a colossal album amicorum compiled by her, retracing, with the help of souvenirs of all kinds (letters, telegrams, portraits in miniatures, drawings, cut-outs, engravings, pious images, photographs, locks of hair, etc.), all the episodes of her life.
