This beautiful and rare plate is the sixth in a series of 12 lithographs published between February and May 1821, under the title "Various subjects drawn from Life and on Stone," also known as the "English Series"(fig. 1).
Horses exercising should not be confused with another lithograph by Géricault (but largely executed by Léon Cogniet) of 1822, of the same dimensions, with a simplified background, and titled Deux chevaux gris-pommelé que l'on promène (fig. 2). This version is much more common.
Géricault had made a first visit to London between April and June 1820; he returned there in December 1820, determined to make his fortune among a clientele of rich horse lovers and collectors of English equestrian artists such as Stubbs and the Alkens. He settled with Adam Elmore, a horse dealer who lived near the Hyde Park racecourses, for whom he made, among other things, The Derby of 1821 at Epsom the following year (fig. 3).
He quickly made contact with Charles-Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1859), the best lithographer in London (out of the 11 lithographers in the city at that time, compared to 20 in 1822, reflecting the rapid popularity of lithography), who was based in Soho and had previously trained as a painter in Paris.
