Félix Alexandre, The sedan chair, circa 1860-1870 Folded fan, the sheet of cream silk painted in blue monochrome with highlights in the 18th century style. A young woman in the centre, in her sedan chair, is stopped by a servant who addresses her. A page opens the procession. Fanmaker's signature on the left "Alexandre". Dumb reverse. White mother-of-pearl mount pierced with a repeated motif. The throat richly carved in light relief of golden volubilis. H.t. 28.5 cm-H.f. 14.5 cm (restorations to the plumes, cuts to the leaf) NB: a fan with an identical leaf in pink cameo, from the collection of Helga-Lee, Princess of Schaumburg-Lippe, is illustrated in H.
