The first flight of the hot-air balloon, circa 1783-1785 - Lot 126
The first flight of the hot-air balloon, circa 1783-1785
Rare folded fan, the silk sheet painted with gouache of five cartels showing the aerostatic experiments in France at the end of the 18th century. In the center, the first hot air balloon takes off from the Folie Titon, a wallpaper factory in Réveillon, on October 19, 1783. The suspended basket with animals probably refers to the flight of the balloon from the Palace of Versailles. On the sides, Charles and Robert's balloon in the Tuileries, and the peasants frightened by the balloon falling in Gonesse in the vicinity of Paris. Two rare representations complete this composition, including an "Aerostatic figure in the form of Pegasus" by the Enslen brothers (1785), and a balloon with mobile wings and rudder in the style of Thibaut Delisle's project (1784) proposed to the Montgolfier brothers.
