Confucius, homage to the scholar, ca. 1760 - Lot 93
Confucius, homage to the scholar, ca. 1760 Folded fan, the leaf in skin, mounted in English, and painted with gouache of the triumphal entry of a Roman imperator. Mounted on a chariot and crowned by fame, the warrior enters the city with his army. A procession of soldiers and slaves accompany him. Roman senators in toga, their heads girded with laurels, greet him on the left. Painted reverse of two servants in a garden full of peonies and cherry trees. One kneels before a large Chinese figure, a scholar. This may be Confucius, who was over two metres tall, or Ou Yangxiu, whose name means "wine and peony", two symbols that are found on this leaf. Exceptional ivory frame*, very finely cut and carved with objects of the scholar, including fans, but also vases and teapots referring to the tea ceremony. The field of the fan has an astonishing decoration in relief associating open fans, porcelain pots, a coffee pot and a deer. The head is richly carved with a flower and pierced throughout with the profiles of two tiny figures. H.t. 28,3 cm-H.f. 12,9 cm (missing, restored, worn)
