David and the King, ca. 1750 Folded fan, the double gouache-painted sheet of an ancient banquet scene in a palace interior. David is about to play his harp to calm the violence of King Saul. His harp is shown on the left. This biblical story illustrates the calming power of music. On the reverse, a rare representation of Lot intoxicated by his daughters. Mounted in pierced ivory*, engraved and painted with gouache, gilded. Between two musical trophies, lovers riding a goat, on a burgundy background.
