A wedding in the Balen family in Dordrecht, ca. 1730 Rare folded wedding and commission fan, the skin sheet, mounted in the English style and painted with gouache of a couple walking together to the wedding bed. The young bride wears the colours, blue and white, of the Virgin. A gardener's love precedes them. Two doves are snogging next to a love altar with two hearts burning on the left. On the right, the coat of arms of the Balen families of Dordrecht and the bride's coat of arms (azure with two wolves passant sable) are placed above the figure of Hymen. The Balens are an important Dutch family. Matthijs Balen (1684-1766) was a portrait painter and grandson of the author Mathias Balen (1611-1691). Dumb reverse. Pierced ivory* mount, carved and engraved with confronting loves and dolphins. The head carved in shell. H.t. 27 cm-H.f. 14 cm (fading, wear and tear and old restorations)
