The hunters and the tiger, China, 19th century broken type ivory fan* finely carved and sculpted with a tiger hunting scene. On the left, hunters armed with swords and pikes surround a tiger while a dignitary on horseback looks on. On the right, a rider watches the killing of game in a garden setting. In the center, a shield is carved with the figure of the European destiny. Sixteen animals, including monkey, buffalo and dog, are carved in the upper part of the strands. H.t. 16.5 cm (small missing parts, rest. to the plume)
