MEDALLION IN LACQUERED COPPER FROM JAPAN. - Lot 357
MEDALLION IN LACQUERED COPPER FROM JAPAN. Oval in shape, with gold decoration slightly in relief called "Takamakie" on a black lacquered background called "Roiro", representing a portrait of Ninon de Lenclos, according to an engraving of the time, surmounted by his name in gold letters. On the reverse is the inscription in gold letters "Born in Paris. Died on 17 October 1705, aged 90". With suspension ring. Japanese work, Kyoto, late 18th century, for export, via the counter of the Dutch East India Company. Small accidents on the edges, but good general condition. H.: 12 cm - W.: 9 cm. Reference: several examples of this series devoted to European historical figures are in the National Museum of Japanese History (Rekihaku) in Sakura. These models of medallions were produced mainly for orders from Europe and exported in a relatively short period of time between 1785 and 1800. It was around 1785, at the request of Europeans living in Japan, that the Kyoto lacquer masters began to copy Western designs. Most of the portraits produced were inspired by the book of prints L'Europe illustre, containing the abridged history of sovereigns, princes, prelates, soldiers..., published in Paris between 1755 and 1765 by Dreux du Radier.
