HARD PORCELAIN VASE FROM THE SÈVRES MANUFACTORY. - Lot 121
HARD PORCELAIN VASE FROM THE SÈVRES MANUFACTORY. Lancel model, 3rd size model, decorated with a polychrome portrait signed Moriot and dated 1837, representing in medallion Prince Ferdinand-Philippe, Duke of Orléans (1810-1842), wearing the officer's uniform of the Dragons of Orléans regiment, framed by a frieze of gold palms and laurel leaves and enhanced with platinum held in place by a ribboned knot, on a blue background, on the reverse appear trophies and the inscription "Anvers et Mascara" (a reference to the two military campaigns undertaken and won by the son of King Louis-Philippe in 1832 and 1835), with two openwork side handles with a gold background. The neck and the lower part ending in a square base in gilt bronze are decorated with palmette friezes, rosettes and ivy leaves in gold and enhanced with platinum. French work, Manufacture de Sèvres, mid-19th century, with no visible marks. Very good condition. H.: 33 cm - L.: 15 cm. Provenance: this vase was most probably ordered and delivered for Louis-Philippe I, King of the French, or for his wife Queen Marie-Amélie, parents of the Duke of Orleans. On 18 July 1839, a pair of Etruscan vases with a portrait of the Duke of Orléans (identical to ours but painted by Mme Ducluzeau) and King Louis-Philippe was delivered to the Palace of Saint-Cloud by the Manufacture of Sèvres. They appear in Queen Marie-Amélie's study in the palace of Saint-Cloud. On the back of the vases, as on our copy, appear military attributes with the names of Antwerp, Mascara and the Dragons of Orleans. The portrait of the Duke of Orléans for this vase was executed in 1836 and the royal attributes are based on a drawing by Leloy (Les Sèvres de Fontainebleau, by Bernard Chevalier, Paris, 1996, pages 104 and 105). See also a model very similar in shape and size but with a slight variation in the decorations and decorated with a portrait of Louis-Philippe also signed by Moriot, sold by the Pescheteau-Badin studio
