A LARGE FAN THAT ONCE BELONGED TO THE DUCHESS OF MORNY. Mounted in ivoire∆, appliquéd with the monogram "S.M." (Sophie Morny) under a ducal crown, 18 strands folded with decoration on fabric of a bouquet of roses signed Marie Caurentin. Metallic belly strap and tassel of trimmings. Preserved in a black silk case embroidered with the monogram M (Morny) under a ducal crown in gold thread and decorated with small glass beads. Wear and tear, small accidents, as is. H.: 34 cm - Open W.: 63 cm. Provenance: this beautiful fan belonged to the Duchess of Morny, born Princess Sophie Troubetskoï (1838-1898). She was an important figure in international high society and in the political world of the Second Empire. In particular, she played an important role in the restoration of the Bourbons in Spain. She was the wife of the Duke of Morny (1811-1865), half-brother of Napoleon III, and later on the second marriage of the Great of Spain José Osorio y Silva, 16th Duke of Albuquerque (1825-1909), and the mother of Mathilde de Morny.
