NAUNDORFF Karl-Wilhelm (1785-1845) - Lot 23
NAUNDORFF Karl-Wilhelm (1785-1845) Famous character claiming to be the dolphin Louis XVII, son of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette, who survived his detention in the Temple prison. Rare and interesting unsigned autograph letter, Rotterdam, May 19, 1845, addressed to his daughter, Amélie Naundorff, also known as Princess Amélie de Bourbon (1819-1891), 2 pages in folio, with a wax stamp on the reverse, text in Dutch. An old French translation is attached. Folds, freckles. Translation: "I have often told you what I repeat to you today: entrust yourself with all your soul to the Almighty, our good Father in heaven, who certainly never abandons those who entrust themselves to him. The false judgments against us and the slanders of men against us with their bad tongues have no point before him who knows better our purity and innocence. I hope, my dear Amelia, that soon and by grace the King of Kings will be near us. In the meantime, I enclose a letter of credit for £50. This sum, with wise saving, can last until the old faithful bear personally can announce to you the day of his marriage to Mrs. H. At the same time he will make all arrangements to show his palace to the new court. Of this £50, you must pay no debts and from this moment on pay all right and you can tell the world that I will come back soon and settle everything. (...) I add £10 to this letter of credit, they must go to my snowshoe supplier, pay and receive the snowshoes I ordered long ago, pack them and with all possible severity abandon Sodore and I will transfer with arms and luggage to Mrs. H. in R. Do not make any unnecessary expenditure. Clothes and lingerie are cheaper here than at Sodore. We will make no communication to anyone. Stay quietly at home. It will soon be warm, you will make a pleasure trip, the Bear will drive you. Little T will stay where she is until further notice. And don't say anything, don't hear anything to anyone. Otherwise, as usual, go to bed at ten o'clock in the morning, the house locked
