Extremely rare pair of two-tone cast and chased gold shoe bu - Lot 61
Extremely rare pair of two-tone cast and chased gold shoe buckles, decorated with palmettes and flowers on an amati background. Barbs and copings in cast gold, pivot perhaps in another metal. Possibly Marseille or Grasse second half of the 18th century. Each bears a typical Grasse and Marseille master goldsmith's stamp, initials GT a fleur de lys and a grain of remedy under a crown, and an ICC stamp in a rectangle. Both unidentified. Gross Weight, 201g "A 1679 ruling states that while harness buckles were marked and countermarked, with the tips and sticks of the said fittings marked with the master's hallmark, small objects such as shoe buckles bore only the master's hallmark. With the increase in the dimensions of the buckles and thus the weight of precious metal, the question of marking the crimped buckles as well as that of the buckles in "imitation" or doubled has fuelled many debates within the goldsmiths' guild. Henry Nocq reports that in January 1763 the Parisian silversmiths are agitated, hold meetings to decide whether they will ask for the obligation to have the mounted buckles marked with false stones their decision opens a period when the mounted buckles are not marked, this decision will be modified in September 1783, the court of the Mint orders that all gold or silver objects, even very small, even mounted be marked" extract from: François Doré, Les boucles de costumes en France 1650-1830. Massin, 2008. These buckles are typical of the shoe buckles of the period 1765-1820, the barbs and copings themselves in gold and not in steel indicate a high quality manufacture; however the punches, one of which is typical of the punches of master goldsmiths of the Ancien Régime in Marseille and Grasse, are not identified and do not allow a precise dating or location.
