École Française du XIXe siècle - Lot 206
École Française du XIXe siècle Marie-Antoinette, dauphine of France (1755-1793). Gilt bronze bust, resting on a column base in stained wood ending on a square base, representing the young princess posing with her head turned to the right, curly hair and wearing a coat tied in front. This model is similar to the original version sculpted in agate by the artist after the bust of Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne. On the back it bears the inscription: "Engraved by Glachant 1774". Slight wear of time, but good general condition. French work from the end of the 19th century. H.: 22 cm - W.: 10 cm History: the original of this charming composition executed in 1774 was presented to the queen in Marly, June 23, 1774. The following year the artist executed the bust of the king as a pendant. He exhibited them at the Salon du Colisée in 1776, then at the Salon de la Correspondance in 1781. On 22 March 1782 they both appeared at the sale of the estate of Glachant. Some old replicas like ours were executed in bronze. Reference: see in the work "Les portraits de Marie-Antoinette" by Albert Vuaflart, André Marty edition, 1910, plate XVI, the illustrated reproduction of the hard stone bust made by Nicolas Glachant.
