Two rare horsehair and straw borders, France, late 19th century. Probable French work from the Auvergne region in blond horsehair made with spindles and embroidered with motifs of small straw leaves or medallions in imitation of the flat golden metallic thread. Straw was an advantageous alternative to flat metal wire, often covered with gold and much more expensive to produce; it was also much lighter than metal. Dim. 42 cm x 5.5 cm and 44 cm x 4.5 cm. (bel état) Two rare borders of French handmade bobbin lace made of horse hair cream in colour and embroidered in straw in imitation of golden metallic flat thread.
