Reed border, Mechelen, Spindle, Belgium, circa 1900. Group of rushes and lanceolate foliage sprouting from three large cut leaves alternating with a large oval medallion with lily-of-the-valley sprig, the motifs worked in grid and canvas, and adorned with square spirit stitches, seeded with bells, Mechelen braided network. Cream cotton, starting threads. Dim. 3.05 m x 12 cm. (perfect condition, never used) A border of Belgian handmade Mechlin bobbin lace dating from about 1900, the design of rushes and leaves and three larger leaves alternating with an oval shaped medallion incorporating Lily of the Valley. Cotton, cream in colour. Dim. 3.05 m x 12 cm (very good unused condition)
