Rare handkerchief in Valenciennes de Brabant, spindles, circ - Lot 309
Rare handkerchief in Valenciennes de Brabant, spindles, circa 1870-80. A large frame in Valenciennes de Brabant, bobbin lace. Radiant decoration of rectilinear cartridges worked in alternation of a fancy network with square points and a variant of the Valenciennes network with square meshes on points, the meshes partly braided and partly twisted, supporting a variety of blooming flowers, foliage and berries, with a large rose with two tulips at each corner. Light ivory cotton. The silk centre with the later winding. This technique is a continuation of the Valenciennes of Ghent invented by Sister Marie-Joseph, superior of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Visitation of Ghent, but with some motifs in light relief and a simplification of the network. To be compared with the model reproduced in the book: "Treasure of the Lacemaker's Art" Pl.45 - fig.5 of A. Carlier de Lantsheere, 1922. A rare handkerchief of handmade Brabant Valenciennes bobbin lace, about 1870-80. Cotton thread, cream in colour. This type of Ghent Valenciennes, called "Brabant Valenciennes" was produced after the depth of Sister Marie-Joseph from the Visitation convent who invented the Ghent Valenciennes technique. Please see: "Trésor de l'Art Dentellier" Pl.45 - fig.5 from A. Carlier de Lantsheere, 1922.
