Border in Alençon, needle, France, 3rd quarter of the 19th century. A Napoleon III-style decoration of a spray of spiral branches and flexible leafy stems surrounding two roses in full bloom with petals worked in 3D effect and hearts adorned with a seven-pointed star of St Esprit, set against a large floral cartouche with medallions adorned with fashions, a garland formed by a series of flowers punctuating the decoration. Dark ivory cotton, horsehair. Dim. 4.40 m x 10 cm (good condition, a tear at 40 cm from the beginning, rare very small holes or fine resumptions in the network) Cf. "Lace a History" Mrs. Santina M. Levey, Fig.428. A deep border of French Alençon handmade needle lace dating from the 3rd quarter of the 19th century.with a good floral design. Cotton thread, ivory colour, horse hair at the lower border and surrounding some motifs.
