Surrounding an episcopal cloth, Dresden embroidery, mid-18th century. Made of cotton muslin well embroidered with foliage and flowers in a twist, framing on each side a cartouche surrounded by soft foliage, two with motifs of a trefoil cross, one at the bottom embroidered in imitation of a partridge's eye borrowed from Binche lace, and two with the patriarchal cross indicating the function of this linen devolved to an archbishopric, the contours of the motifs in chain stitch, the bottom entirely embroidered with various stitches in spread thread. Colour white/white-cream. Dim. laid flat: 47 cm x 45 cm, H. lace: 7 cm (good condition) See "Embroidered with white" Mrs Heather Toomer, p.54 & 71. A fine whitework border with ecclesiastical motifs worked for church linen in Dresden stitch, Germany, dating from the middle of the 18th century. White/cream in colour.
