Needle lace, Argentella and Sedan, France, 1st half of the 18th century. Two extremely fine sedan stitch laces with a wide variety of stitches used, circa 1720-30. A border with two alternating mirror motifs, both topped with a canopy: one basket from which rise palms and foliage in the shape of flames and flanked by two large fantastic flowers, the other motif with two other large fantastic flowers framing a third flower between two leafy cartouches, a series of large medallions along the border, networks with large pitted meshes. Cream linen on blue paper. Dim. 103 cm x 6.5 cm (good condition, some fine restorations) A neck with large cartridges with network entirely in Argentella and circumscribed by flowering branches and large blooming flowers decorated with various points. Creamy linen. Dim. flat: 37 cm x 15 cm (fine stitching) We attach a border made of Argentan, circa 1750-60, with densely branched branches with flowers and foliage and a border with flattened pyramid-shaped cartouches decorated with fine modes, hexagonal mesh network at the buttonhole point. Levey, Fig.273 A & B and Fig.323 A Two borders and a collar of fine French handmade needle lace, A border and the collar of Point de Sedan needlepoint dating from about 1720-30, worked in various stitches including Argentella at the collar, fine linen thread, cream in colour. Dim. border : 103 cm x 6,5 cm (good condition, a few fine repairs) Dim. collar if laid flat : 37 cm x 15 cm (some fine joins) Together with a French Argentan needle point dating from about 1750-60, linen thread, ivory colour (a few repairs to the ground) Please see : "Lace a History" Mrs Santina M.
