Bobbin lace border, Milan, 2nd half of the 17th century. Mirror decoration of fine twigs in complex convolutions drawing multiple motifs of flowers and small cartridges decorated with various dots and connected by double pitted flanges. Cream linen, tightly woven. Small blue paper seals embossed DB for one and PR (?) for the other. Dim. 4.25 m x 14 cm. (good condition, two discrete seams, rare pale spots) Cf "Old Italian Lace" Volume 2, pl.235 & 237, Mrs Elisa Ricci A deep and long Milanese handmade bobbin lace border, possibly an alb flounce, dating from the 2nd half of the 17th century. Symétrical motifs of scroll twigs embelished with little flowers and medallions ornated with various stitches, and joined together with double picoté bars.
