History : this compotier was made during the reign of Emperor Nicholas II (1894-1917), in order to complete the magnificent Kremlin service ordered in 1836 by his ancestor, Emperor Nicholas I (1796-1855), to the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory of Saint Petersburg. The decoration was designed by the painter Feodor Solntsev (1801-1892), a great connoisseur of ancient Russian art. He was inspired by various motifs from Russian medieval art, directly borrowed from the enamelled gold plates made by the Kremlin workshops in 1667 for Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich. This service was regularly used in the Kremlin Palace for coronations, diplomatic evenings and large banquets in honour of the cadets of the imperial army.
