Henri Gervex (1852-1929), Nellie Melba as Ophelia, ca. 1890-1900 Folded fan, the paper sheet lined with painted skin of a young woman singing in the moonlight. She is in the middle of a pond, surrounded by reeds. The composition is based on the famous portrait by Henri Gervex (private collection) of the soprano Nellie Melba (1861-1931) in her role as Ophelia in the play "Hamlet" by Ambroise Thomas (1811-1896), at the Paris Opera in 1889. Signed on the left in red letters "H. Gervex" for Henri Gervex (1852-1929). Renowned painter, very introduced in the Parisian high society, friend of Rodin, Maupassant, Proust, he benefits from numerous public orders. Dumb reverse.
