The Wonders of China, ca. 1770-1780 - Lot 134
The Wonders of China, ca. 1770-1780 Folded fan, the double sheet of paper painted with a large garden scene evoking China. Characters are sitting in front of tables or in conversation. A couple is on the threshold of their home. All have a head in cut ivory with personalized features. Several mica windows give the illusion of openings in the architecture and provide transparency to the leaf. Birds and butterflies are made of natural feathers, as is the dress of one of the figures, while other subjects are enhanced with thin mica plates. Each motif is underlined with a golden line to accentuate the preciousness of the composition. Two characters on the reverse side in a garden. Red lacquered bamboo frame richly enhanced with gilded flowers and vases, and mother-of-pearl fragments. The head in ivory. H.t. 29,2 cm - H.f. 15,5 cm (very good condition, restorations) Provenance: label with the reference 1849 of the former collection Henry-René d'Allemagne (1863-1950). This fan is illustrated in H.-R. d'Allemagne, "Les accessoires du costume et du mobilier", Paris, Schemit libraire, 1928, tome I, plate 77.
