France crowning a marshal of France, circa 1780 - Lot 112
France crowning a marshal of France, circa 1780 Folded fan, the cream silk sheet painted with small maritime views in medallions, in a rich decoration of palms, dolphins, oar and trident, enhanced with colored sequins and gold chain stitch. In the center, France in the guise of a crowned woman places a crown of flowers on the head of a man. A second woman embodying Peace, dressed in antique style, presents him with an olive branch, symbol of peace. He is wearing a blue uniform and the cord of the Holy Spirit. His hand rests on a marshal's baton. He is sitting on a cannon barrel, a shield, and surrounded by the flags of France. Perhaps it is the Marquis de Castries (1727 - 1801), Marshal of France in 1783, Minister of the Navy from 1780 to 1787, whose strategy allowed the French fleet to win during the American War of Independence. Reverse: red line of the outline of the cartels. Mounted in engraved ivory and silvered with doves. The plumes carved on the theme of Love. H.t. 27,6 cm - H.f. 12,8 cm (restorations) Provenance : label with the reference 1842 of the former collection Henry-René d'Allemagne (1863-1950).
