The Golden Apple, ca. 1730 - Lot 66
The Golden Apple, ca. 1730 Fan, the double painted skin sheet of the shepherd Paris offering the golden apple to the most beautiful of women, the goddess Venus. Minerva and Athena recognize her as the lovers, one of whom places a crown on her head. Pan holds his flute on the right, and Mercury greets this crowning. The composition is based on the work of Hans Von Aachen (1552-1615) in 1588. Vast landscape on the reverse. Mounted in white mother-of-pearl, the head in ivory. The throat carved with a dancer evoking the portrait of La Camargo by Nicolas Lancret (1730), and children musicians. The plumes enhanced with mother-of-pearl plates, and brown tortoiseshell worked in undulation and engraved with foliage. H.t. 29 cm - H.f. 17,2 cm (wear, lacks, important restorations) *A modern frame is attached.
